NASA and the ESA (European Space Agency) are already preparing for a manned Mars mission in the near future - the first time humans will step on the red planet. That will be followed by a campaign to colonize Mars.
Mars will eventually be a spring board, a launch point to reach beyond our solar system to the stars.
Whether you believe that other life exists out there, or not, or your particular faith insists otherwise, that we are the only species around, science provides a compelling argument in favor of other intelligent life beyond our tiny planet.
In our observable sky, alone, what we can see directly, exists about 100 (one-hundred) billion visible galaxies - which amounts to countless hundreds of billions of suns and planets.
The Hubble Deep Space telescope, took one photo which revealed ~5,500 galaxies over an area that took up just 1/32,000,000th of the sky. In other words, extrapolated, scientists put the number of existing galaxies at over two trillion in number.
Any way you toss the dice, it is impossible, in fact, completely arrogant, to assume that no other intelligent species exists out there in over two trillion galaxies.
The distances that separate our small planet from the rest of the Universe are so immense as to make it seem inconceivable, but that is just a matter of time and distance - it does not change the fact that other intelligent species, like us, are probably looking back our way, at the Milky Way, and wondering the same thing.

Let's assume, that out of that two trillion or so galaxies, just one of them manages to get a communication through to us, a mere HELLO.
What would happen to our world on the day we received an indisputable HELLO from another species in a galaxy just light years from our own?
How would that affect the narrative, the stories we have been telling ourselves about Creation?
How would that affect our perspective of the Universe?
Most importantly, what if that HELLO led to something more, and what if, in the process, humanity had to suddenly reassess its cultural values, whether war and violence was more important than reaching out to the stars and meeting them?
